Few posts have caught the attention of our story last week about the new Island Discount – or Island Disgusting – store. Comments were mixed. Immediate reactions ranged from thrilled at having a long-empty storefront back in use to “THIS Is insulting to R.I. folks old & new!” So, we decided on polling our readers.

The Roosevelt Island Daily News
At The Daily, our concerns are over the poor presentation, especially adjacent to the already deeply inappropriate head shop. As we reported in a weekend feature…
“The storefront facade is the first impression a business makes on its customers. In a small town like Roosevelt Island, it also plays a crucial role in shaping the urban aesthetic, local economy and community identity.”
But while RIOC and its retail partner, Hudson-Related, fails miserably at esthetic concerns, the business may be a godsend for many residents.

For all the complaints of the old hardware store, this new store is completely useless. I had absolutely no reason to go into this store. The weekend flea markets provide better merchandise. Truly, nothing worth buying – regardless of price. To paraphrase Woody Allen punctuating a restaurant’s poor food and service “… and the portions were small”, I also complain: they’re closed on the weekend. – Frank Farance

Given time they might be able to get the products adjusted to what is really needed for our population but they could really do better with the esthetics of the place. Now it kind of looks like, what we called them as a kid, a junk store.

Exactly. Regina.

It’ an ugly warehouse but that’s the new look for Main Street and it’s not going to improve.
-
Agreed, Joann, but we don’t have to like it. Thanks.

The word ‘cheap’ comes to mind, and I am not talking about price.

Thanks for your thoughts, Joyce.

When Island Discount first opened, my comment was a negative one (see above: Joyce Keating). I have changed my opinion, having given them time to settle (as I should have in the first place). Visual means so much … with boxes now cleared from the floors and product stacked uniformly on the shelves, I am pleased with Island Discount.

I agree. It got a lot better, but they need to break the pattern and put up a professional sign. That’s a flaw all over Main Street, including RIOC itself. They need to change that and take away the South Bronx theme. That’s what Hudson Related was supposed to do.

Why are there so many boxes on the floor? Buy more shelves. Leaving merchandise on the floor looks lazy and dirty.

Exactly right, Lucy. Good idea, lousy execution.

I have been there twice. I liked it the first time. Very helpful and neat..prices are pretty good.. I went last evening, the boxes all over the floor were not great. They were getting deliveries. Hopefully, they put mores shelves in.They just opened a week ago.
Wholesome market is a mess and dirty and smells and overpriced. I never go in there . The discount store offers to order things for you if they don’t have them. Hopefully they expand their hours and open on Saturday..They have cheaper laundry detergent, paper products, etc . Not all of us can afford the new upscale stores and eateries .-
Thanks, Jean.

They were very nice the one time I went in there and bought a couple of things. I think we should give them a chance to settle in before we judge. No?
-
We have no choice really. They should have considered their impact on the streetscape before they opened. They are nice, but that wasn’t.
Thanks.
