About RIVAA – The Roosevelt Island Visual Art Association
The Roosevelt Island Visual Art Association, or RIVAA for short, is a vibrant community of artists that has been making waves in the New York City art scene. This non-profit organization, comprised of an internationally diverse group of around 35 artists, is dedicated to promoting visual arts and creating a thriving art center on Roosevelt Island12.
RIVAA was formally established in 20013. However, the seed for this initiative was planted a year earlier, in 2002, when local artists launched the “Island of Art” initiative4. This initiative aimed to bridge art and community by transforming Roosevelt Island into a hub for artistic expression and cultural exchange.
Over the years, RIVAA has been instrumental in organizing various art events and exhibitions on Roosevelt Island. One such event is Art Frenzy, a formative festival where local artists teamed up with galleries3. Another notable contribution of RIVAA is the establishment of its ambitious gallery on Roosevelt Island, which serves as a gateway between Manhattan and Queens5.
As of 2023, RIVAA is celebrating its 21st anniversary6, marking over two decades of promoting art and fostering community on Roosevelt Island. Despite its relatively short history, RIVAA has had a significant impact on the local art scene and has played a crucial role in shaping Roosevelt Island’s cultural identity.
