Take the Poll

With as much fanfare as they could muster, RIOC cut the ribbon on two new pickleball courts on Roosevelt Island. The sport is growing fast in popularity, and there have been vocal supporters.

But truth be told, of roughly 50 people who showed up, about half were either participants or RIOC employees, meaning – once again – only a couple dozen community members showed up.

Is that a sign of low interest or just indifference toward the ceremony? We’ve designed the following poll to get your reaction. Please vote once and let you feelings be known.

All responses are confidential. Even we can’t see who’s voting. And only bulk reports will be shared with the public and RiOC

The Pickleball Poll

Did RIOC serve residents well by installing pickleball courts behind Sportspark? The state agency invested a large sum in building the courts. Needless to say, it could have been invested elsewhere. Does this use community resources in the best possible way for most residents?

The Pickleball Phenomenon: How a Small Paddle Sport Became a Global Sensation

Pickleball, the small paddle sport, has taken the world by storm. It is not the most popular sport in the world, but it is growing at an exponentially rapid rate. It is even becoming a school sport. In this article, I will delve into the history of the beloved sport, from its creation to its rise in popularity. I will thus further discuss why it has become so popular over the years among people of different ages and backgrounds. It is important to highlight its unique characteristics that set it apart from other sports. Stay tuned to learn more about the pickleball phenomenon.

Pickleball was initially created in 1965 on Bainbridge Island, Washington, by a group of three fathers. Former state representative Joel Pritchard, businessman Bill Bell, and Barney McCallum wanted to entertain their bored and restless children, and the sport was born. The name pickleball was derived from the family dog, Pickles, who chased after the balls and would hide in the bushes with them. The rules of the game were created to incorporate aspects of other sports such as tennis, badminton, and ping pong. A key feature of the sport is that it is played on a smaller court than tennis, making it a more accessible sport to older and younger people alike. Also, the sport requires a plastic ball with holes and a paddle instead of a racket.
