Greenwich Village Motto
Posted in the pandemic year of 2020, this motto could have worked for Greenwich Village many times over.

Greenwich Village in the Rear View Mirror

Greenwich Village has a long and interesting history. It was once its own town before becoming part of New York City in 1874.

It’s always been known for its art and culture scene. In the early 1900s, Greenwich Village was home to many artists, writers, and musicians. Some of the most famous were Jackson Pollock, Mark Rothko, Bob Dylan and Andy Warhol.

But these days, most of the artists are gone and it’s home to some of the most expensive real estate in New York City. Bleecker Street especially hosts high-end retailers that chased traditional shops out.

Many celebrities and wealthy individuals have made Greenwich Village their home. But despite the high-end reputation, there’s also a lot to offer visitors and residents on a budget. Affordable restaurants, bars and shops pepper the Bleecker-McDougal area.

You can find something to suit your taste and budget in Greenwich Village.

Greenwich Village was once its own town

Greenwich Village was once an independent town, chartered by the Dutch West India Company in 1642. It’s name was Greenwich, after Greenwich, England. The English took over the area in 1664 and renamed it Greenwich Village — accurately translated as Green Village Village.

The Village remained an independent municipality until 1874 when it was annexed by New York City. A rural community for most of its history, it grew rapidly in the mid-19th century as waves of immigrants arrived in the city.

It quickly became a haven for artists and bohemians, and it remains one of the most vibrant and creative neighborhoods in New York City.

Part of New York City

Greenwich Village is on the west side of Lower Manhattan in New York City. Known as an artists’ haven, the bohemian capital, and the center of the counterculture in New York, it’s now more a university town. The village is bounded by 14th Street to the north, Broadway to the east, Houston Street to the south, and the Hudson River to the west.

Greenwich Village became part of New York City in 1874. The neighborhood has been not just home to influential artists and intellectuals, and has been the site of several important political protests and movements. Today, Greenwich Village is a thriving community with a rich history and culture.

Colin Huggins drew big crowds and plentiful donations for years in Washington Square Park in Greenwich Village, but the pandemic brought tough times. Last we heard, he was doing his act live online.

Greenwich Village has a rich history that is still evident today

Greenwich Village has a long and rich history still evident today. Originally settled by the Dutch in the 1600s, Greenwich Village was home to many different immigrant groups over the centuries.

This melting pot of cultures can still be seen in the diversity of the area’s architecture, which includes everything from federal-style row houses to Art Deco apartment buildings.

The Village was also home to many important cultural movements, including the Beat Generation of the 1950s and the Folk music scene of the 1960s. It was ground zero for the Stonewall Riots that forced greater acceptance of the LGBTQ community.

Today, it’s one of the most desirable neighborhoods in New York City, and its unique character continues to attract artists, musicians, and other creative types.
