Looking to get engaged with politics and activism? Consider joining the Four Freedoms Democratic Club!

The Four Freedoms Democratic Club is one of the largest political clubs in New York City. The group hosts monthly meetings, campaigns for Democratic candidates, and advocates on a host of issues, including reproductive rights, affordable housing, and the environment.

With over 100 members, the Four Freedoms Democratic Club frequently welcomes local elected officials. Recent guests include Congressman Jerry Nadler, Council Member Julie Menin, State Senator Liz Krueger, and Assembly Member Rebecca Seawright.

Since 2014, the club has represented the 76th Assembly District, which is comprised of Yorkville, Lenox Hill, and Roosevelt Island. Meetings are hybrid, so members can attend in person or via Zoom.

Last year, several club members submitted testimony to the Independent Redistricting Commission in strong support of keeping Roosevelt Island in the 76th Assembly District and were thrilled to learn that the Commission voted to do just that. The club has had an active presence on the Island, hosting meetings at Good Shepherd and the Sanctuary, and donating PPE to local residents during the height of the pandemic.

“We were very happy to learn that Roosevelt Island will remain in the 76th Assembly District,” said club president Jerry Ferguson. “We hope to engage more people on the Island looking to get engaged in Democratic politics, especially as we gear up for 2024.”

Next year the club will be organizing phone banks and canvassing trips to nearby swing districts in support of Democratic candidates. In past years club members have knocked on doors for John Fetterman in PA, Pat Ryan in upstate New York, and Max Rose on Staten Island. Club members also wrote postcards and made phone calls for Joe Biden in the 2020 election.

If you’d like to learn more, you can stop by the Four Freedoms Democratic Club table at Roosevelt Island Day on June 10th. The club will also be hosting a meeting on the Island, at the Sanctuary, on Thursday, September 21st. You can learn more, and sign up for upcoming events, HERE.
