It took some pushing and pulling, but Roosevelt Island returns to having one the City’s lowest COVID-19 infection rates. Department of Health statistics show 10044 as one of only two Zip Codes reporting less than 1% positive.

Many more are being tested, these days, yielding a broader picture of the impact of COVID-19 on Roosevelt Island. In the most recent week reported by DOH, 632 were tested.
But only 6 were positive.
Increased community awareness plays a role, and the diligence of residents in reporting Red Bus and Tram violations reduced daily risks.
The Line That Didn’t Land
I stood in the back of Good Shepherd Chapel on the evening of April 15, 2026, at the Steam Plant Demolition Town Hall, watching people adjust scarves and jackets before the meeting began. Benjamin Jones, President and CEO of RIOC, thanked us for attending and, without a pause, said he was “pleased to host tonight’s town hall on the city’s demolition of its steam plant.” The demolition, in other words, was not up for discussion.
