Narrow lanes wind to the Tagus River where it meets the Atlantic Ocean. The area was built by the Moors as a fishing village, about a thousand years ago.

With its deeply Moorish heritage and history as a fishing village, the Alfama is a survivor, the only section of Lisbon to survive a hellish earthquake in the late 18th Century. It’s like walking in history with the present breaking through in intermittent spaces.

You can really get a feel for what it was like, once upon a time, to have your life center on climbing up and down this hill to and from the sea.
