The Beat

Hello, friends! Tucked into the heart of Roosevelt Island at the Cultural Center on Main Street, a quiet but vital effort continues to nourish our neighbors body and soul. Every other Friday, the Roosevelt Island Disabled Association (RIDA) opens the doors of its Food Pantry to provide groceries, compassion, and a sense of community to those who need it most.

The Power of a Pantry
For many of our neighbors, especially seniors, people with disabilities, and families navigating tough times, access to affordable, nutritious food isn’t a given. That’s where RIDA steps in, not just with canned goods and produce, but with dignity and kindness.

What You Need to Know

  • When: Every other Friday, 4:00 PM to 6:00 PM
  • Where: Roosevelt Island Cultural Center, 546 Main Street
  • Who: Open to all Roosevelt Islanders in need
  • How to Participate:
    • Bring valid identification for registration
    • If you’re not feeling well, please stay home
    • Maintain social distancing while in line
    • Wear a mask for the safety of all
    • Bring a shopping cart or sturdy bag
    • Always show respect and gratitude to volunteers and fellow neighbors

Feeding the Spirit of Roosevelt Island
The volunteers at RIDA are more than just food distributors, they’re lifelines. With warm smiles and steady hearts, they help create a space where no one feels ashamed for asking for help. This is what Roosevelt Island is all about: showing up for each other.

If you or someone you know could use a little help this week, please stop by the pantry. And if you’re in a position to give, whether your time, your support, or your resources, RIDA’s doors are open to you, too. Together, we keep Roosevelt Island nourished, strong, and united.

From shelf to heart, this pantry is a reminder that generosity lives in the small moments: a bag of rice, a shared smile, a neighbor remembering you by name. Thank you to the Roosevelt Island Disabled Association and every volunteer who makes this gift possible.

Rivercross and the Quiet Green Light

The Votes, the Conflicts, and the Sudden Exit of Margie Smith and Fay Christian

Rivercross privatization was enabled in 2010. This matters now because the same governance structures that allowed Rivercross to privatize without formal conflict controls are still in place. The same public authority oversees land leases, settlements, and redevelopment decisions that affect every resident on Roosevelt Island today.
