Welcome, neighbors! Every Wednesday, we take a step back to look deeper. Whether it’s a headline making waves or a local issue with broader roots, this is our space to learn, reflect, and grow together.

After a charged evening at the Kennedy Center, where former President Trump’s appearance at Les Misérables sparked boos, “USA!” chants, and drag queen protests, the headlines have been buzzing. But here on Roosevelt Island, this moment also invites a more personal question: what is theater really for?

And more importantly, what does it mean for our kids, our community, and our future?

Local Stages, Lasting Impact

When politics takes over Broadway and cultural institutions become battlegrounds, it’s easy to forget that theater’s original purpose isn’t conflict, it’s connection.

That’s where community theater comes in. It’s theater on a human scale. It’s where young people find their voices, neighbors share stories, and creative expression isn’t a luxury, it’s a lifeline.

MSTDA: Roosevelt Island’s Creative Heart

Here on the Island, we’re lucky to have the Main Street Theatre & Dance Alliance (MSTDA). MSTDA has opened its doors to artists of all ages, offering:

  • Theater classes and productions for children and teens
  • Dance, voice, and acting workshops for adults and seniors
  • Original shows, community collaborations, and summer programs

Located at 548 Main Street, MSTDA is more than a performance space, it’s where generations of Islanders have stepped into the spotlight and discovered what they’re made of.

Why It Matters Now

Community theater gives us more than entertainment. It teaches empathy. It builds confidence. And in a world that’s increasingly divided, it reminds us of the power of listening, storytelling, and being seen.

Here’s what makes it special, especially for our young neighbors:

  • Emotional Growth: Theater helps kids express themselves in ways school can’t always reach.
  • Teamwork & Trust: They learn to support each other, onstage and off.
  • A Sense of Belonging: Every child finds a place, whether they’re center stage or behind the scenes.
  • Community Connection: Families and friends become part of the story, filling seats and cheering each other on.

Let’s Keep the Curtain Raised

While national stages may grab headlines, it’s our local stages that shape lives. And that’s worth protecting, celebrating, and investing in.

So if you’re wondering what role you can play, sign your kids up for a class, volunteer for a show, or just show up and clap loudly. Because the best kind of drama is the kind that brings us together.
