It may not be quite ready for prime time yet, but The Girl Puzzle is back on public display in Lighthouse Park with the barriers down.

Subject to inexplicable neglect after it was discovered that concrete work forming its foundation had not set right, The Girl Puzzle is getting a fix.
“RIOC Grounds have removed the barricades and tape around the Girl Puzzle monument,” RIOC Communications and Community Relations Director Bryant Daniels told The Daily on Friday.
After RIOC‘s interim management team took over in January, Daniels engaged with the frustrated artist. Amanda Matthews, the sculptor who created the artwork acting as a centerpiece in Lighthouse Park, had gotten little back and forth from the state agency.

The concrete supporting her internationally acclaimed sculpture was crumbling. RIOC seemed at a loss as well as strangely unconcerned. That’s changed. Working with Matthews, Daniels and the RIOC team are now finally discussing solutions.
All About The Girl Puzzle Sculpture by Amanda Matthews
The Girl Puzzle, located in Lighthouse Park at the northern tip of Roosevelt Island in New York City, is a powerful sculptural installation by artist Amanda Matthews. Here’s a breakdown of its key aspects:
Concept and Inspiration:
- Honoring Nellie Bly: The Girl Puzzle is a monument dedicated to the trailblazing journalist and activist Elizabeth Cochrane Seaman, better known by her pen name Nellie Bly.
- Dual Inspiration: The title and concept draw inspiration from two sources:
- Bly’s first published article, titled “The Girl Puzzle,” which addressed societal misconceptions about working women.
- Bly’s groundbreaking undercover investigation at Blackwell’s Island Asylum, documented in her book “Ten Days in a Madhouse.”
- Symbolism of the Broken and Repaired: The sculpture depicts fragmented faces of diverse women, some conveying hardship, others resilience. This fragmented style reflects the challenges women have faced and overcome throughout history.
Design and Interaction:
- Monumental Scale: The bronze sculpture is quite large, creating a powerful presence in the park.
- Partial Faces as Puzzle Pieces: Individual faces are presented in sections, resembling giant puzzle pieces.
- Reflective Surfaces: The sculpture incorporates reflective surfaces that distort and reassemble the faces as viewers move around it. This allows visitors to become part of the “puzzle” and contemplate the concept of collective identity.
Importance and Recognition:
- Celebrating Women’s Strength: The Girl Puzzle serves as a tribute to the diverse experiences and unwavering strength of women.
- Public Art with a Message: The sculpture sparks conversations about social justice, women’s rights, and overcoming adversity.
- Acclaimed Artwork: The Girl Puzzle has received critical acclaim for its artistry and powerful message.
