One theory is that spiritual gifts are only given by God at specific times for specific purposes. Once those purposes are fulfilled, then God takes back His gift.
It’s also possible that God has given us these gifts to help us grow in our faith and understanding of Him. When we reach maturity, He may withdraw them so that we can grow without spiritual crutches.
Spiritual Gifts Sometimes Cease
Another possibility is that spiritual gifts cease because our faith wavers or we become distracted by other things.
In this case, it’s important to remember that having faith in God is essential if we want to experience His presence and receive His blessings. One source, the Bible, tells us that “without faith, it is impossible to please [God],” so if our faith falters, then we may struggle to access the power of His Spirit.
Finally, there could be a practical, physical reason why they cease – illness or injury could prevent us from using them effectively.
Anything from chronic fatigue syndrome or depression causing physical exhaustion, illness or even an injury makes concentration on prayer or meditation difficult. I saw that in my own, non-religious meditation practice.
Then, seek professional help if needed to get back on track with your spiritual gifts.
