RIVAA Public Purpose

Friends, we have a special treat coming to our island’s beloved RIVAA Gallery, and it is one you will want on your calendar. This Sunday, November 16 at 3 PM, the gallery opens its doors for The Last Shall Be First, an afternoon of chamber music that reaches deep into the heart of the early nineteenth century.

A Program That Bridges Musical Eras

RIVAA Gallery Concerts is bringing us two remarkable artists:

  • Aisslinn Nosky, violin
  • Yi-heng Yang, fortepiano

Aisslinn, known widely as the dynamic concertmaster of The Handel and Haydn Society, joins the always brilliant Yi-heng Yang for a program that traces an inspiring arc through a changing musical world. We will hear Mendelssohn’s rarely performed arrangement of Bach’s powerful Chaconne for violin and piano, a work that carries centuries of musical thought within its structure. From there, the performers lead us into Beethoven’s Violin Sonatas Nos. 1 and 10, pieces that bookend the composer’s own artistic evolution.

This combination gives us a chance to listen step by step as form, expression, and musical storytelling began to shift into the modern era. It is the kind of program that invites us not only to listen, but to learn.

How outcomes stopped being shaped and started being approved

Committees are supposed to be where outcomes are shaped. They are meant to be the place where questions slow decisions down, where competing interests surface, and where public responsibility is exercised before anything reaches a formal vote.
