Things To Do In New York City

Friends, we have a beautiful tradition returning to our little island soon, and it is one many of us look forward to each winter. The Roosevelt Island Chanukah lighting celebration is coming back for its seventh year, and it promises an evening filled with warmth, joy, and the spirit of community.

A Gathering of Light and Community

On Saturday, December 20 at 6:30 PM, the Chabad of Roosevelt Island will welcome neighbors to the south lawn of Rivercross for a festive public menorah lighting. It is one of those moments when our island feels especially connected as families, friends, and longtime locals gather to share in a celebration that honors tradition and togetherness.

What to Expect

This year’s celebration will feature plenty for everyone to enjoy.

  • Fresh hot latkes
  • Warm drinks to keep the chill away
  • Music for dancing or simply soaking in the atmosphere
  • Dreidels and small treats for kids and adults alike
  • A joyful lighting that brings us all closer

It is not just a ceremony. It is a chance for all of us to feel the light of the season, to come together with neighbors, and to celebrate Jewish pride right here at home.

Why This Tradition Matters

Events like this help keep our island’s spirit strong. Every winter, Roosevelt Island builds its own small constellation of gatherings, and this one shines especially bright. The menorah lighting reminds us how meaningful it is to stand side by side as a community. Even those who do not observe the holiday often come out to show support, learn, and enjoy the glow.

Join the Celebration

If you would like more information, Chabad of Roosevelt Island welcomes you to reach out at (212) 652-5660 or nechama@rijewish.org. Whether you come for the latkes, the music, the learning, or the warmth of community, this evening offers something good for each of us.

See you there, neighbors.

The first thing winter reveals when it loosens its grip is not green grass. It is honesty.
