Our favorite sparkle-on-the-lawn tradition is back. The Roosevelt Island Tree Lighting Ceremony brings the community together for music, treats, and that first big glow of the season at Meditation Lawn. According to RIOC’s event calendar, this year’s ceremony is set for Friday, December 5, 2025, from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m., at Meditation Lawn.
What to expect
- Countdown and lighting: The island tree lights up after the community countdown.
- Performances and music: RIOC describes the event as featuring live music and holiday performances by community groups.
- Giveaways and raffles: Expect gift and food giveaways and raffle prizes while supplies last.
When and where
- Date: Friday, December 5, 2025
- Time: 6:00–8:00 p.m.
- Location: Meditation Lawn, Roosevelt Island
Plan a little extra time for arrival so you can grab a good spot near the stage and enjoy the lead-up performances.
Why this matters
This ceremony has become one of our island’s core traditions. It turns a chilly Friday night into a warm gathering where we see old friends, meet new neighbors, and kick off the holidays together. RIOC’s pages highlight how the event is built for togetherness with performances, giveaways, and festive touches that invite everyone in.
Tips for neighbors
- Bring a hot drink thermos and blanket for the lawn.
- If you are coming with little ones, arrive early so they can catch the performances and photos.
- Pack your patience and cheer. This is a popular event and worth the few extra minutes it takes to settle in.
Stay in the loop
RIOC has been promoting the tree lighting on social media, so check their Instagram posts and stories for any same-day updates or weather notes, along with day-of reminders and clips from the ceremony.
Neighbors, let’s meet at Meditation Lawn, share a song or two, and welcome the season under the lights. If you capture a special moment, send your photos to The Beat so we can share the joy across the island.
Air Doesn’t Have an Address
The Roosevelt Island Steam Plant fight has reached a new stage: DOB has agreed to a site walkthrough, ArchRI says it is bringing independent engineers and architects, and four elected officials have formally asked RIOC to create a Community Advisory Group (CAG) for the project.
