Hello neighbors, Ericka here from The Beat! After three decades of flashes of yellow-and-blue, we’re fully stepping into the tap-and-go era. The MTA confirmed that MetroCard sales will end on December 31, 2025 and here on Roosevelt Island, those beloved vending machines are already gone. Our station no longer offers MetroCard sales or refills, meaning swiping is officially out the window
But don’t worry, OMNY has got your back. You can now pay using contactless debit or credit cards, digital wallets, or a physical OMNY card. These cards cost $1 (though that may increase in future)—and can be purchased or reloaded at retail spots, via mobile sales vehicles, online, or at OMNY machines which will be installed in every station by fall.
This change isn’t just modern, it’s smart. By saying goodbye to MetroCards, the MTA expects to save at least $20 million a year in production, distribution, and maintenance costs. Plus, OMNY’s fare-capping system means riders who tap at least 12 times per week automatically get free rides for the rest of that week—no need to guess which card option saves you money.
Here on the Island, that convenience is already helping commuters. No more fumbling for a machine, and no more carrying exact change, just a quick tap (preferably once, not twice in confusion!). That older generation of riders might need a helping hand, though; if you know someone who’s a bit dicey with technology, offer to walk them through a tap or download a transit app, they’ll thank you every rush hour.
It’s the end of an era, but OMNY promises a smoother, smarter ride. Let’s embrace the change, teach a neighbor, and maybe keep a MetroCard as art material… or at least as retro flair.
When Representation Was the Promise
