Hi neighbors! As we make our plans for barbecues, family gatherings, and red-white-and-blue fun, here’s an important update to keep in mind before the big day arrives. Roosevelt Island will not be a fireworks viewing location for this year’s Independence Day festivities.

What You Need to Know

This year, the Macy’s Fourth of July Fireworks will be launched from barges located south of the Brooklyn Bridge, far from our usual riverfront vantage points. Because of this change:

  • No fireworks will be visible from Roosevelt Island.
  • Four Freedoms Park will not host any events or viewing parties.
  • Visitors are strongly discouraged from traveling to the island for fireworks.

Why This Matters
Each year, our island sees an influx of visitors hoping to catch the iconic fireworks display, especially from the southern tip at Four Freedoms Park. But with no visibility this year and no planned programming, RIOC (Roosevelt Island Operating Corporation) has issued a friendly but firm reminder to the public: Roosevelt Island is not a fireworks destination this Fourth of July.

Stay Local, Stay Safe
If you’re staying on the island for the holiday, consider gathering with friends and neighbors for a quieter celebration, perhaps a picnic in Lighthouse Park or a local potluck with views of our beautiful skyline. While we may not have the booms and sparkles overhead, we still have our community spirit right here at home.

Let’s help spread the word and reduce unnecessary foot traffic by sharing this news with friends and family who may be planning a trip to the island. Keeping Roosevelt Island peaceful and safe for residents on the holiday is a gift we give to each other.

While we might miss the fireworks this time around, we’ll never miss a chance to celebrate what makes our island so special. Here’s to a joyful, safe, and neighborly Independence Day, friends.

For official updates, visit RIOC’s website or follow their social media channels.

Emergency Without Urgency

An emergency is not just a condition. It is a classification.

When government invokes the word “emergency,” normal process changes. Timelines accelerate. Environmental review can narrow. Procurement pathways can shift.
