What Riders Need to Know Now

The city’s floating subway has flipped to its Spring 2025 timetable—and while most routes only see subtle tweaks, the Astoria line stop at Roosevelt Island picks up a livelier morning beat. Below is your cheat sheet on what changed, why it matters, and how to keep real‑time tabs on your next boat. For anyone planning a visit, it’s essential to check the schedule for Roosevelt Island ferry travel to ensure seamless arrangements.

1. Quick look: what’s new since March 31?

NYC Ferry rolled out its Spring schedule on Monday, March 31—two weeks earlier than last year. According to the operator’s blog, the refresh fine‑tunes run times to match longer days and growing ridership: • extra weekend shuttles for cruise‑ship crowds at Red Hook • revised departure slots on the Astoria, Soundview, Rockaway and South Brooklyn routes.

For Roosevelt Island riders the headline is an additional southbound trip in peak A.M. hours: boats now depart at 7 :05, 7 :35, 8 :05 and 8 :35 AM—an average 15‑minute headway before 9 o’clock. The biggest gap used to hit a frustrating 28 minutes after 7 :07—gone now. Northbound returns keep the familiar 15‑to‑20‑minute cadence after 5 PM but slide 2–5 minutes later; double‑check the PDF or app if you’re catching that last 9 :32 toward Astoria.

Plan your trip: Full Astoria PDF or hit the blue Plan Your Trip button at ferry.nyc for custom door‑to‑dock routing.

2. Fares, transfers & that $1.45 discount

A regular adult one‑way still costs $4.00. But don’t leave money on the dock:

  • Free transfers — Any route change within 120 minutes of activating your ticket is included. Want to hop from RI to DUMBO? Ride Astoria to East 34th, transfer to East River, pay once.
  • Reduced fare $1.45 — Seniors 65+, riders with disabilities and Fair Fares NYC participants qualify via the Ferry Discount Program. Sign‑up happens right in the NYC Ferry app (or at Pier 11 ticket window if you need in‑person help).
  • Ten‑trip bundles — $27.50 brings the per‑ride cost to $2.75 if you sail more than twice a week.

Heads‑up: The Post hinted at another system‑wide fare bump in 2026, but nothing is final. (nypost.com)

3. Live alerts: Transit app vs. NYC Ferry app

Both apps push departure changes, but after testing them side‑by‑side this week Transit won for predictive countdowns. It factors vessel velocity and East River traffic to adjust ETAs a few minutes before NYC Ferry’s native feed. The native app, however, remains your only portal to buy or activate tickets and manage discount eligibility. Pro tip: run both—Transit for the live countdown widget and NYC Ferry for tickets. For updates on the Roosevelt Island ferry schedule, using these apps can help keep your travel smooth.

4. Dock‑side etiquette (Spring edition)

  • Boarding order goes wheelchairs → strollers → bikes → foot passengers; keep bikes in the rear racks.
  • Scooters & e‑bikes must power off before the gate drops; battery‑swap brands are still banned.
  • Dogs ride free if crated; leashed pups need a $1 on‑board carrier tag from the attendant.
  • Evening vibes — The 7 :12 PM northbound crossing now frames the sunset behind Manhattanhenge‑ish streets; photographers, this is your boat.

5. First and last weekday departures (Roosevelt Island)

Southbound to Manhattan (Wall St./Pier 11)
6:17 AM, 6:55 AM, 7:33 AM, 8:11 AM, 8:49 AM, then roughly every 38 minutes until the 9:27 PM last boat. Stay updated so your daily routine matches the Roosevelt Island ferry times.

Northbound to Astoria / East 90th St.
7:02 AM, 7:40 AM, 8:18 AM, 8:56 AM, 9:34 AM, then every 38‑40 minutes until the 8:56 PM last boat.

(Times pulled directly from NYC Ferry’s Spring 2025 PDF; always confirm in the app on your travel day.)

Final wake‑wave

Whether you’re commuting, stroller‑striding or plotting a bar‑crawl to Brooklyn Navy Yard, the Roosevelt Island ferry schedule now moves a shade faster on early weekdays. Sync your app, set your alarms 3 minutes earlier, and enjoy the extra breeze on that 8 AM ride.
