The Roosevelt Island Beat is the rhythm of our days

The Roosevelt Island Beat is the rhythm of our days, the swirl of cherry blossoms in spring, the quiet hum of a weekend yoga class, the sparkle of ferry lights on a summer evening. It’s where we capture the now of Island life—one cheerful, timely moment at a time.

I’m Ericka, and this is my favorite place to be. The Beat is where I share what’s happening in our community—from pop-up art shows to library book swaps, farmer’s markets to blood drives, new small businesses to ferry service changes. If it’s part of the everyday magic of living here on Roosevelt Island, you’ll find it in the Roosevelt Island beat.

How It Relates to Our Four Streams

While the Wire digs into difficult questions, Lighthouse builds slow, steady truth, and Tunnels explores feelings under the surface, The Beat is our bright, blooming front porch.

It’s the most timely of our four writing streams, focusing on events, announcements, and celebrations that shape life right now on Roosevelt Island. And while it’s full of warmth and neighborly charm, it’s also a vital way to stay informed without the heavy tone of more investigative work.

In short: The Roosevelt Island Beat is where we show up for each other.

Examples of the Roosevelt Island Beat topics

Here’s a taste of the types of stories we will share in this stream:

  • “5 Sweet Things to Do on Roosevelt Island This Weekend”
  • “Spring Art Pop-Up at Good Shepherd Plaza”
  • “Ferry Schedule Update: What’s Changing and When”
  • Astoria the Turkey‘s Final Farewell: A Look Back at Roosie’s Island Adventures”

Each piece is easy to read, full of heart, and focused on keeping you in the loop about what matters right now on the Roosevelt Island beat.

Want to Be Part of the Beat?

We need you. 💛

The Beat—and The Daily—runs on care, not payroll. We’re volunteers, neighbors, and part-time storytellers doing our best to share what matters.

But we can’t be everywhere. That’s where you come in:

📸 See something sweet? Snap a photo.
📝 Hear about an event? Let us know.
🗣️ Know someone doing something special? Share their story.

It’s easy to connect: Just subscribe to The Lighthouse and reply to the welcome email or any Friday post. Our editor, Theo, reads every message.

If you’ve got information, photos, or public notices from your building—we want it. Feel free to send us anything that belongs in the beat of Roosevelt Island.

Because this Island doesn’t just live in documents or debates. It lives in moments. And we’d love to share yours.

With heart, always,
Ericka

The Emergency Was Always Underground

How decades of documented risk were ignored while a convenient emergency took center stage.

The steam plant and the steam tunnel were never two problems. They were one system. They were only separated later, when separating them made development easier and responsibility harder to pin down.
