When buying a diesel-powered vehicle—whether a truck, van, or other vehicle—you usually buy it with power and performance in mind. Diesel engines offer plenty of both, especially in off-road situations and when towing trailers or cargo. If you want your vehicle to deliver horsepower and torque for a very long time, check out these four tips for improving your diesel engine’s performance.
Don’t Skimp on Maintenance
The best way to improve your diesel engine’s performance is to conduct periodic maintenance. Neglecting regular upkeep may eventually necessitate rebuilding or replacing the entire engine. Consistent oil and oil filter changes are the cornerstone of automotive maintenance. Change the oil every 3,000–6,000 miles, and check with your mechanic or the owner’s manual to be sure. Air filters also require periodic replacement so that the engine is free of soot, debris, and other matter that can destroy it.
Upgrade the Exhaust System
Your vehicle’s stock exhaust system is perfectly fine, but you can turn fine into excellent with a performance exhaust system. This system has an increased diameter, which allows greater efficiency in expelling exhaust, allowing the engine to pull in more clean air and “breathe” more easily. That means more horsepower, a better sound, and greater fuel efficiency. Talk to your mechanic about your exhaust system options!
Tune It Up
Engine control units (ECUs) are on-board computers that instruct your diesel engine about how things should run. Usually, these devices have factory settings and handle functions such as fuel rail pressure, air and fuel mixtures, and the amount of torque and horsepower the engine should provide. Tuning resets and recalibrates these functions, enhancing performance, drivability, and more! Keep in mind that you should never push the engine past its limits in your quest to take the engine to greater heights.
Keep It Clean
When you take your truck to the pump for a fill-up, consider adding a fuel additive. Diesel fuel can get dirty, and contaminants may impede performance by gunking up the engine. Multiple fuel additives can clean and protect the engine against this kind of buildup. Other additives keep the fuel from gelling during cold weather, while corrosion inhibitors protect the engine from rust while providing extra lubrication. Check with your mechanic about the best additives—some promise far more than they deliver!
Those are just four tips for improving your diesel engine’s performance. Take the time to employ them and extend the life of your vehicle to get the power you need when you need it!
