Sirens echoed through the canyon as over a dozen emergency vehicles responded to a worker who fell at the 440 Main Street construction site. Although FDNY said it was routine, its massive response seemed out of line with the injury reported.

The sounds of emergency vehicles are not uncommon in New York, but this outburst worried Roosevelt Islanders.
“Hearing lots of sirens since about 9:30-ish,” one reported. “Wasn’t sure where it was coming from Ground collapse? Are we on fire? Drug/gun raid?”
But it was nothing like that.
“The worker was in the excavated area where we’re doing Con Ed work,” Hudson President David Kramer told The Daily. “He fell from a 3’ ladder and unfortunately broke his leg. DOB visited the site and didn’t issue any violations after characterizing the situation as ‘worker error.’”
A Worker Fell and FDNY Responded in Full
Around 9:30 this morning, an unidentified construction worker fell in an area outside the rising building that will become 440 Main Street. No one, so far, has explained how that happened, but it’s the second known fall at the location.
Earlier, the Roosevelt Islander blog reported a one-story fall that was contained within the structure.
This fall was different as the injured man was rescued on the ground just a couple of yards from Main Street.

FDNY personnel used a pulley system to get the worker to a place where he could be removed by ambulance.
RIOC also did not respond to an emailed request, although numerous Public Safety Officers were on the scene. It’s not clear, though, that they employ a public information officer now. On their website, reporters on deadline are instructed to call Akeem Jamal, a vice president who mysteriously exited RIOC some months ago.
A worker fell but FDNY came prepared…
Here’s a video of the final, visible moments of the rescue.
At the end, you can see injured worker being rolled off on a stretcher.

This story is developing, and we will update if any important details emerge, but as of this morning, it’s more thunder than showers.
Priced Out of the Air. Priced Out of Safety.
I want to begin with a person, not a policy.A life, not a headline.
