On a personal note, I’ve walked through the Lower East Side many, many times, but I’ve never had – nor seen – any scary incidents. Partly, that’s because I don’t look like a tourist – yes, New Yorkers can tell – meaning I’m not a prime target for the unsavory elements all cities have.
Here’s a tip, don’t walk around with a lot of shopping bags, especially from expensive stores, and don’t come to a complete group stop in the middle of the sidewalk. Even if you’re lost.
