What is the difference between consciousness and awareness?

Start

The consensus belief is that “consciousness is the sum of all our perceptions, and awareness is the sum of all our conscious experiences.” Let’s take a closer look.

by David Stone

In other words, consciousness refers to our ability to perceive and process information, while awareness refers to our conscious experience of the world around us. Though they are often used interchangeably, there is a crucial difference between these two concepts.

Consciousness is a passive process that simply captures and organizes information, while awareness is an active process that involves navigating and making sense of our surroundings. Simply put, consciousness is like a camera and awareness is like a map.

Awareness allows us to orient ourselves within our environment and make decisions about where we want to go next.

So what does this mean for you and me? Well, if you’re ever feeling lost in life or like you’re just going through the motions, it might be helpful to check in with your level of awareness.

Taking some time each day to intentionally reflect on your experiences can help you become more aware of your surroundings and better able to navigate the path ahead.

What’s more, increasing your awareness can also lead to deeper levels of understanding and connection with those around you.

How conscious awareness manifests in everyday life

We all know that emotions can be powerful and often unpredictable. In everyday life, these forces can manifest in a multitude of ways: Take, for example, anger—it’s something we’ve all experienced, whether it’s the grumbling after cutting someone off in traffic or feeling downright furious when someone does us wrong.

Similarly, happiness can bring about a sense of joy and ease; feeling a rush after finally getting that promotion or receiving the perfect birthday gift from a loved one are everyday examples of this emotion.

Other emotions like fear or sadness are no less powerful, prompting reactions such as shaking hands when confronting our deepest worries or shedding tears when hearing sad news.

Ultimately, emotions influence every moment of our everyday lives, with everyday examples we can make tangible connections to them.

To really understand their impact on our everyday lives requires conscious awareness, recognizing each emotion for what it is and how it impacts behavior—only then will we be able to successfully manage it.

Share your experiences with consciousness and awareness

Consciousness and awareness can be slippery subjects to pin down. It’s hard to describe what we experience because it so often goes beyond words.

That said, if we share our individual experiences, we start to collect a patchwork picture of not only what conscious and aware life looks like, but also how we can best practice it in everyday life.

That’s why I’d like to invite you to share your own encounters with consciousness and awareness. What does an “aware” moment look like for you? When have you been conscious of mental traps or patterns? How have you worked with them? But don’t limit yourself—what observations or stories can you share that enlighten the conversation?
