Neighbors, not too long ago we celebrated a victory, by the defeat of a Times Square Casino proposal. Now a major decision out of Albany this week is set to reshape parts of New York City in a big way. In a unanimous vote, New York State regulators approved three full casino licenses for New York City, officially opening the door for large scale casino developments in Queens and the Bronx. The announcement has sparked excitement, concern, and plenty of questions across the city. And yes, what happens beyond our shoreline always finds a way to ripple back to Roosevelt Island.

The Big News at a Glance

The New York State Gaming Facility Location Board approved:

  • Resorts World NYC at Aqueduct Racetrack in Queens, expanding its current racing and gaming facility into a full casino resort.
  • A Hard Rock and Metropolitan Park casino near Citi Field in Queens, backed by Mets owner Steve Cohen.
  • A Bally’s casino in the Bronx, built on the former Trump Organization golf course site.

Each project is required to pay a 500 million dollar licensing fee, totaling 1.5 billion dollars for the state, with much of that revenue expected to support transit funding, including the MTA.

One detail drawing significant public attention is the Bronx project’s financial arrangement. Because the Trump Organization previously operated the golf course site, they stand to receive up to 115 million dollars tied to Bally’s casino development.

Why This Matters to Roosevelt Island

While none of the casinos will sit directly on the Island, their impact could still reach us in very real ways.

Potential benefits include:

  • New jobs across hospitality, construction, tourism, and operations.
  • Significant funding for transit improvements that could eventually benefit subway and ferry riders.
  • Increased tourism that may boost business throughout the city.

Concerns raised by many communities include:

  • Gambling addiction and its social consequences.
  • Increased traffic, congestion, and strain on surrounding neighborhoods.
  • Questions about long term public safety and infrastructure.

As Island residents, we know how closely our daily lives are tied to the larger transit and development decisions of the city. When the MTA gains revenue, we pay attention. When new traffic patterns emerge in Queens or the Bronx, we feel the effects on our subways, bridges, and ferries.

What Happens Next

Although the board has issued its recommendation, final approval now heads to the New York State Gaming Commission, which is expected to confirm the licenses later this month. If fully approved, construction would begin in phases, with casino openings expected over the next several years.

Community input does not stop here. Environmental reviews, zoning approvals, and public hearings will continue as each project moves forward.

A Note From the Island

Friends, this is one of those moments where opportunity and concern arrive hand in hand. There is promise here for funding, jobs, and economic growth. There are also fair worries about who benefits most and who bears the risks. As always, our strength as a community comes from staying informed, asking questions, and showing up when our voices are needed.

We will continue following how these decisions unfold and what they mean for our city and our Island.
