Hello, neighbors! Roosevelt Island is a unique community, and keeping it safe is a team effort. The NYPD’s 114th Precinct, based in Astoria, Queens, is responsible for patrolling our island along with nearby neighborhoods like Long Island City and Woodside. Because there isn’t a full NYPD station right on the island, our local Public Safety Department (PSD) plays a crucial role. PSD officers are on duty 24/7, working as peace officers to enforce laws, respond to incidents, and coordinate closely with the 114th Precinct. Together, they ensure Roosevelt Island stays secure while maintaining our friendly, neighborly atmosphere.

Weekly Overview (October 13–19, 2025):
This week, the 114th Precinct recorded 56 crime complaints. Let’s break down the numbers and what they mean in plain language:

AVAC Is Working. The Model Is What’s Aging.

What fifty years of use reveal about infrastructure, upkeep, and the decisions that keep systems alive. The system is not failing.

Roosevelt Island’s AVAC system is often discussed as if it were either a miracle or a menace. In truth, it is neither. It is functioning infrastructure that has reached a point in its lifecycle where how it is maintained matters as much as whether it exists at all.
