Welcome, neighbors! This week on The Beat, we’re dedicating our coverage to one of the most important events of the year, the 2025 General Election. Each day, we’ll explore a different piece of the puzzle: how to vote, who’s running, what’s on the ballot, and why it all matters for Roosevelt Island.

Today, we start with the essentials, your complete guide to voting in this year’s election. Whether you’ve voted on the island for years or are preparing for your first time, here’s everything you need to know, from registration and early voting to absentee options and local polling places.


When and Where to Vote

  • Election Day: Tuesday, November 4, 2025
  • Hours: 6:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m.
  • Location:P.S./I.S. 217 – 645 Main Street, New York, NY 10044
    • Accessible Entrance: Through the schoolyard (Exit 6)

Early voting gives you flexibility and on Roosevelt Island, it couldn’t be easier.

Voter Registration Deadlines

Make sure you’re registered before showing up at the polls!

  • In Person: 10 days before Election Day (October 25, 2025)
  • By Mail: Must be postmarked 15 days before (October 20) and received 10 days before (October 25)
  • Online: Deadline is 10 days before Election Day (October 25, 2025). Register on the Board Of Elections in the City of New York website

Voting by Mail and Absentee Ballots

New York voters can choose between early mail voting and absentee ballots — both are secure and count the same as in-person votes.

Deadlines to Apply for a Ballot:

  • In Person: Up to 1 day before Election Day
  • By Mail or Online: Must be received 15 days before Election Day (October 20, 2025)

Returning Your Ballot:

  • Must be postmarked by November 4, 2025, and received within 7 days after Election Day
  • You can also hand-deliver your completed ballot at your polling place or Board of Elections office on Election Day

Who Can Request an Absentee Ballot:
Any qualified voter may request an early mail ballot without providing a reason. You may also request an absentee ballot if you are:

  • Away from New York City on Election Day
  • Unable to appear due to illness, disability, or caregiving responsibilities
  • A patient or resident of a Veterans Health Administration Hospital
  • Detained in jail awaiting Grand Jury action or serving time for a non-felony offense
