Rivercross Board Elections: Nominations Now Open

The 2025 Rivercross board elections are officially underway, and it’s time for Roosevelt Island residents to get involved. On Tuesday, May 13, 2025, Rivercross Tenants’ Corp. will host its annual Board of Directors election during a Zoom webinar. At this meeting, shareholders will vote to elect three board members to serve new three-year terms. These positions will influence the direction of one of the Island’s most iconic co-op buildings.

This year’s election includes two returning candidates and one beloved board member stepping down:

  • David Andrews – running for re-election
  • Simina Kroculick – running for re-election
  • Margie Smith – stepping down after years of dedicated service

We join the Rivercross community in thanking Margie Smith for her steady leadership and thoughtful contributions over the years.

To participate, candidates must be at least 21 years old and a Rivercross shareholder of record. Importantly, nominations must be submitted by Friday, April 4 at 5:00 PM. Following that, all candidates must provide a biography or statement by Friday, April 11 at 5:00 PM. Additionally, a Meet the Candidates event will be held on Wednesday, April 30, 2025, offering neighbors a chance to hear directly from those running.

Margie is Stepping Down from the Board—and Stepping Up in the Governance Committee?

Although Margie is stepping away from her role on the Rivercross board, she’s far from leaving public service behind. A longtime champion of community values, Margie previously chaired RIOC’s Governance Committee and now continues to serve as an advisor. She plans to attend today’s Governance Committee meeting, happening on Wednesday, April 2, 2025, at 5:30 p.m. at the RIOC Operations Office, 680 Main Street. The agenda includes discussions on revised by-laws and conflict of interest policies. RIOC will post the webcast link on its website by noon today—so if you’re curious, feel free to tune in and be part of the conversation.

Why It Matters More Than You Think

The Rivercross board elections are more than just a yearly tradition—they are a pivotal moment in how the building is governed and how priorities are set. The board reviews budgets, guides renovation plans, considers long-term capital improvements, and responds to shareholder concerns. Their decisions can shape not only the physical condition of the building but also the atmosphere of community life inside it.

Because of this, electing engaged, capable board members is one of the most important ways residents can ensure their voices are heard. Moreover, Rivercross holds a special place in Roosevelt Island’s history as one of the original co-ops. Its success and sustainability have ripple effects beyond its own walls, influencing how other buildings approach shared governance.

If your building is also holding board elections—or sharing updates that could benefit neighbors—please consider passing those along. We’re committed to helping everyone stay informed, connected, and engaged. Together, we make this Island stronger.

The Emergency Was Always Underground

How decades of documented risk were ignored while a convenient emergency took center stage.

The steam plant and the steam tunnel were never two problems. They were one system. They were only separated later, when separating them made development easier and responsibility harder to pin down.
