How Can You Make the Most of Your Small Apartment?

Freedom! It’s your first apartment, but a studio or one-bedroom is a bit snug. Here’s how you can use the space you have and make it fabulous!

How Can You Make the Most of Your Small Apartment?

When you move to a big city like New York, your first apartment is a simultaneous taste of freedom and restriction. Freedom because it’s your first time living on your own, but restriction because you have only so much space and money to outfit the place. But don’t let that discourage you. With some creative handling, you can create a cozy but elegant living space. So how can you make the most of your small apartment? Here are a few great tips!

Declutter the Place

You can never go wrong with a good possessions purge. Take time to review all the stuff you have and decide how much of it still serves a purpose. Do you use it frequently, and does it bring you pleasure? Keep it. Has it been gathering dust for years, and you can’t remember why you got it in the first place? Out it goes. Eventually, you’ll feel like there’s more breathing space in your home, leaving you more room to decorate. Still, don’t replace old junk with new junk. Negative space goes a long way toward making a space feel lighter, airier, and more attractive.

Furniture Multitasking

A couch doesn’t just have to be a couch. It can contain a bed for overnight guests, or it can work with a coffee table to provide a temporary workspace. Choosing to buy side tables can provide surfaces for lamps, decorations, and other items. They can also serve as temporary dining tables if your kitchen is small. Buying pieces that offer “secret” storage space can also work to your advantage.

Trick Yourself!

Mirrors are amazing things. Set up a large, full-length mirror on one wall to provide the illusion of a larger room. Sure, you know your one-bedroom apartment didn’t suddenly turn into a four-room apartment. However, your eye perceives sudden depth in a cramped space, and that can raise your spirits. Mirrors also make the most of light, especially sunlight, keeping things bright and pleasant throughout the day. Aid the light with lighter-colored furnishings that reflect it.

Things Are Looking Up

Are you still wondering how you can make the most of your small apartment? Keep the floor free by adding shelving to the upper levels of the room. If your lease allows, install floating shelves, and add hooks to the ceiling for extra storage. Pick up storage boxes that you can stow under your bed, in the higher reaches of the closet, and anywhere else there’s wasted space. Invest in organizers that maximize space inside drawers and cabinets as well. You’ll be surprised by how much living you can fit into a smaller space!

Emergency Without Urgency

An emergency is not just a condition. It is a classification.

When government invokes the word “emergency,” normal process changes. Timelines accelerate. Environmental review can narrow. Procurement pathways can shift.
