Dear Friends and Neighbors,

As a long-time resident of our beloved diverse and multi-cultural Roosevelt Island, I am appalled and outraged at the shocking massacre that took place in Atlanta on Tuesday. It is evident that the mass murderer chose the majority of his victims based on their race (Asian) and gender (female), no matter what the police say. We know this because in this year alone, there have been 3,800 attacks on the AAPI (Asian American Pacific Islander) in the U.S.

This kind of fascist, racist, misogynistic white supremacist crime cannot be tolerated anywhere in America! We must join together in support of the community to condemn this type of terrorism, or any kind of violence against them, whether it be state-sponsored (racial profiling, ICE detention, incarceration, or deportation), or fomented by xenophobic or rabidly racist groups and their copycats!

I encourage my Roosevelt Island neighbors to speak out against this unspeakable killing! We must show the Asian American community that we will support and defend them.! We must offer our help in whatever way they deem is most helpful.

Here are several AAPI organizations that you can donate to:

The smoke had thinned by November seventeenth, but it still clung to my coat and the back of my throat. Two nights earlier, fire trucks had crowded the rear of the Landings, their lights bouncing off brick and glass. The flames were gone. The smell remained.
