Donald Trump Caught Cheating Charities, Coughs up Millions

Forced to dissolve Trump Foundation

Donald Trump, caught cheating charities, paid up millions in penalties. And not just that, he dissolved the Trump Foundation, while his adult kids sat for mandatory training. The judge hoped it would keep them from following in Dad’s footsteps again. But good luck with that.

Acting Attorney General Barbara Underwood accused the foundation of “unlawful coordination with the Trump presidential campaign, repeated and willful self-dealing, and much more.”

Newly elected Attorney General Letitia James pursued the settlement, according to an article in the New York Times.

Charities benefiting are Army Emergency Relief, the Children’s Aid Society, City Meals on Wheels, Give an Hour, Martha’s Table, the United Negro College Fund, the United Way of the National Capital Area, and the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum. Each got $476,140.01.

$250,000 came as a penalty, the rest from dissolving Trump Foundation.

“Charities are not a means to an end,” James said. “Funds have finally gone where they deserve — to eight credible charities.”

How Donald Trump Cheated Charities

Not surprisingly, Trump first blew off the suit as political, but in the end, he confessed to 19 detailed misdeeds.

Some were trivial. He admitted, for instance, that his foundation paid $10,000 for a portrait of himself. It ended up in one of his Florida hotels.

Others were disgraceful. $2,800,000 collected at a veterans’ fundraiser was handed over to Trump’s political campaign in 2016.

True to his character, in November, Trump griped about “4 years of politically motivated harassment” from the attorney general. And then, he got caught cheating charities.

Even after admitting his misdeeds, he wrote, “All they found was incredibly effective philanthropy and some small technical violations.”

The attorney general described the Trump Foundation “as little more than a checkbook to serve Mr. Trump’s business and political interests.”
