Despite initial fears, community advocacy successfully influenced the MTA to redesign the Q102 bus route, ensuring vital service continuity for Roosevelt Islanders. Exciting changes await!
RIOC’s determined effort brings relief to Roosevelt Island transportation with the introduction of the “Red Bus Shuttle.” Despite not being red, it offers vital support for residents, complementing the Main Street circuit every half-hour. This initiative, alongside the revitalized 15-minute intervals, signals a significant leap forward. Kudos to the dedicated individuals and interim leadership for this positive transformation.
NYC Ferry’s new season, starting September 9th, brings updated fares and schedules. The South Brooklyn route resumes service to Governors Island, with some departure time changes on other routes. A modified holiday schedule will operate during Sukkot. Fare policy changes include adjustments to one-way tickets, ten-trip ticket packs, and discounted tickets for students.
Amid the Red Bus crisis, there’s hope as RIOC’s efforts yield progress, with 15-minute schedules set to resume. Senator Liz Krueger’s involvement and MTA’s support have been pivotal. RIOC is prioritizing school year preparations and plans to introduce a new, accessible “Bird Bus.” The community’s patience and teamwork are acknowledged, instilling optimism for the future.

RIOC’s neglect of the bus fleet and failure to explore alternatives is evident, despite financial challenges. The community urges them to do more.
The Roosevelt Island Daily News reported that due to operational issues, only one Red Bus will be running on Main Street. This stems from a lack of updated fleets and poor governance. Roosevelt Islanders are advised to explore alternative transportation options as no immediate solutions are in sight, and significant changes may take time to achieve.
