The Impact of Pay Gap and Poverty on Single Mothers in America

Single mothers face a staggering poverty rate of 28%, due in part to a significant pay gap. Mothers of color fare even worse, earning just 51-52 cents for every dollar paid to White, non-Latino fathers. Additionally, childcare responsibilities impact their careers, with one in five single mothers having to stop working due to childcare challenges during the pandemic. Paid leave could offer a potential solution.
