Dear Roosevelt Island,
As the final morning of the year arrives, we wake up to a familiar quiet. The river keeps moving, the paths feel softer under winter light, and for a moment, it feels like the Island itself is taking a breath. On this last day, the last day of the year on Roosevelt Island invites us to pause, to look around, and to notice how far we have come together.
There is something special about December 31st here. While the rest of the city gears up for noise, countdowns, and packed streets, our Island holds space for reflection. We see it in the early walkers along the promenade, bundled up and thoughtful. We hear it in the hush of the tram gliding overhead. We feel it in the way neighbors exchange a smile that says, “We made it through another year.”
This year brought its share of changes, conversations, celebrations, and challenges. We welcomed new faces, said goodbye to familiar ones, and learned again how deeply connected we are by geography and by care. From community meetings to spontaneous hellos in the elevator, these small moments added up. They always do.
On Roosevelt Island, the end of the year is not just about what happened, but about how we showed up for one another. It is about the parents pushing strollers in the cold, the seniors who keep watch over the benches they know by heart, the kids racing scooters until the sun dips too low. It is about the comfort of knowing that even in a city of millions, this place still feels like a neighborhood.
Tonight, some of us will head into Manhattan or Queens to welcome the new year with fireworks and crowds. Others will stay home, cook something warm, write intentions, or fall asleep before midnight. All of it counts. All of it belongs. The Island has always been good at making room for different rhythms.
As the clock moves closer to midnight, let us take a moment to thank this place for holding us steady. For being our shortcut, our long walk, our lookout point, our safe return. Let us carry the lessons of the year forward with kindness, patience, and curiosity.
Here’s to stepping into tomorrow together, neighbors. The year is turning, and Roosevelt Island is ready.
With gratitude and hope,
Ericka
