“On a summer morning, I shot this view of Midtown Manhattan from across the East River at the site of the historic gantries that once brought railroad tracks to the shore in Long Island City. There’s history in this image too. The United Nations and the Chrysler Building are still not dominated by glass towers sprouting like weeds all over Manhattan.”

From Long Island City’s Gantry State Park, Deborah Julian’s shot becomes a fine art print of the Midtown Skyline. You see how the city is put together. A mix of old, not so old and new, and you see the landmark Chrysler Building, once the world’s tallest, the United Nations and, settled between them, the distinct neighborhood of Tudor City. In the background, glass towers point skyward.
A word about the gantries. You see a section the edge of this photograph. The gantries were powerful installations used to transfer cargo to and from ocean going vessels coming up the East River and the Long Island Railroad. The area is now a state park and bordered by modern apartment complexes. City development turned a once abandoned industrial area into a thriving neighborhood.
