Born in Romania, now settled in Boston, Matei adds to RIVAA’s rich tradition of art rooted in that country. Valeriu Boborelu, Ioan Popoiu and Dan Nistor, RIVAA members, have all mounted solo exhibits.

Matei’s collection, the painter says, captures “the ambivalence of life, of soul and matter, as the objects depicted move aimlessly in time and space.”

The works, abstract still lifes, are rich in color and elaborate design. The message is in the object as well as the color it embraces.

“The so called ‘still life’ has been the focus of my work for decades,” Matei says. “In the beginning, I was fascinated by the materiality of inanimate objects as subject matter and embarked into a contest with the grand masters.

“What an epiphany it was for me when my paintbrush refused to replicate the well-known and gave new life to the world around. I became Pygmalion.”

Poses and Imaginary Objects enlivens Gallery RIVAA, 527 Main Street, Roosevelt Island until October 6th.

Gallery hours: Wednesdays & Fridays 6pm-9pm
Saturdays & Sundays 11am-5pm
